I think websites and blogs make a difference to any author, but especially to a new author. These things generate interest in the author's work.
Even for an established author, there are always new readers out there that may have never heard of their work and websites especially can give them a sense of the work, with exerpts and covers, etc.
I can tell you that I've stumbled across authors many times from a link on a website or even MySpace and decided to purchase their book. I actually discovered your website from an author I enjoy and have friended on MySpace.
I enjoyed your website and the excerpt very much, and look forward to reading your book.

I think a web site is a very important tool for a new and for established authors.

I think readers can learn a lot about an author based on their web site.

I also think that a web site is a great marketing tool where authors can share the information they have with everyone who stops by either through a 'google' or because they have the site saved on their 'favorites'.

(grin) That is just my humble opinion.
